Entrances to steel shelters, however, can be placed into the concrete wall of the airlock. Corrugated steel pipe shelters were tested and proven at the Nevada test site to blast pressures of 200 psi. In order to achieve protection to that level, the shelter must have an arched ceiling and the dirt cover over the shelter chamber must be equal to or greater than the diameter of the shelter.

But when I saw these prefab Hobbit houses, I knew someone had shared in the same fear and wanted to make underground building a little easier. Underground Steel Shelters
Use batteries to power lights and radio communication for the highest efficiency. Swap silo plastic with a plastic tarp or cover for a cheaper alternative. Select bricks or cinder blocks if you live in an area with extremely cold weather during the winter. After determining how many bags you need per layer, fill up one bag and measure it's height. For example, if it's 1.5 foot (0.46 m) tall and you want a 15 foot (4.6 m) tall bunker, you need 7.5 layers (15/1.5).

We prefer to use 30 and 50 gallon barrels for water storage; and in our personal shelters, we always store our water inside our shelters. Pre-filters placed in line prior to processing of NBC contaminates, assuring protection of the HEPA filter from contaminates such as smoke, dirt, insects and larger radioactive particles. Blast valves for all penetrations (Air pipes, Exhausts, Wiring, Antennas, etc.) assuring blast protection and continual positive air pressure in the event of chemical or biological attack. Proper depth of cover for MAXIMUM blast protection assuring blast protection from overpressures from 45 psi to 200 psi.
Repeat this process around the bunker area and average your measurements to get an estimate of the water table level. It is mandatory that nuclear shelter entrances have both a vertical and horizontal component, connected with a 90-degree turn. To properly attenuate gamma radiation, the total entrance length must be at least 4 times the diameter, with the vertical and horizontal legs as close to the same size as possible. All of our shelters have two entrances to assure egress in the event one entrance is blocked by debris. All entrances are protected with steel hatch type blast doors, or concrete filled vertical doors.
Underground homes also co-exist in harmony with nature, and they blend in with the lay of the land. During peacetime we cook in microwave ovens or on electric burners. We never use propane or gas in our shelters for the following two reasons. First, propane is heavier than air and if there is a leak, it could accumulate under the floor where it will pose an ignition problem.
To be effective, you need the walls of your bunker to be between one and three feet thick, which is going to increase your costs significantly. Underground shelters may be cheap to construct; all it takes is a little foresight and planning. Your underground home design should include the way you will bring utilities to the house, including water lines, wiring, skylights and ventilation ducts. Select a contractor who is comfortable with your plans, and who has built underground homes already. The gigantic 55,000 square feet fountain acts as a symbol of wealth and luxury.
